Delivering Exceptional Eye Care

What is Ortho-K?

Orthokeratology, or Ortho-K, is an effective and non-invasive vision correction method used for various age groups.

The specially designed rigid contact lens gently reshapes the cornea (front surface of the eye where it controls and focuses light entering the eye) with high oxygen flow while you sleep. This personalised lens has proven to slow down progression of myopia (short sightedness) in children and young adults.

Research suggests that Ortho-K can even slow or halt myopia progression in children.

Who can use Ortho-K?

Ortho-K is most often recommended to:

  • control myopia (short sightedness) progression and astigmatism in children (ages 7+) and young adults
  • Individuals with dry eye issues
  • Very active lifestyles
  • Individuals not suitable or not preferred for LASIK or other refractive surgeries

What are the risks or disadvantages if I wear Ortho-K?

Ortho-K is a safe and effective vision correction method, but it does have some limitations and potential complications:

1. Temporary effect:

  • Ortho-K does not cure myopia; its effects are temporary and will gradually wear off if the lenses are not worn consistently

2. Ongoing care required:

  • Extensive follow-up consultations (at least 12 months) are necessary to ensure optimal eye health and lens performance. As with any contact lens, improper care can lead to issues such as eye infections

Ortho-K is an advanced and well- researched option for slowing down the progression of myopia in children. Contact our team for more information or to schedule a personalised consultation!

Am I suitable for Ortho-K?

Ortho-K can be a great option for many people, but suitability depends on several factors:

  • Prescription: Mild to moderate myopia (short-sightedness) and low astigmatism are usually suitable. Very high prescriptions may not achieve optimal results.
  • Eye health: Healthy eyes are essential. Conditions such as severe dry eyes, infections, or corneal abnormalities may make Ortho-K unsuitable.
  • Commitment: Success with Ortho-K requires consistent lens wear and proper hygiene, as well as regular follow-up appointments.

A personalised consultation with one of our optometrists is the best way to determine if Ortho-K is right for you.
